Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) refers to capturing and separating CO₂ produced by large emission sources such as power plants, cement kilns, or chemical plants, then compressing and transporting it to deep underground geological formations for long-term storage, preventing it from entering the atmosphere. It is a key transitional technology for achieving net-zero emissions.
Applicable Sectors
- Thermal power plants: coal- and gas-fired power plants are major carbon emitters. Installing CCS systems can capture over 90% of carbon emissions, helping traditional fossil-fuel power generation transition toward low carbon.
- Heavy industry (cement, steel, chemicals): beyond fuel combustion, the chemical reactions in these industries' production processes release large amounts of CO₂ (e.g., cement clinker production, blast furnace steelmaking). These "process emissions" cannot be solved by switching to green power alone and require carbon storage as the final line of defense.
- Negative-carbon technologies (BECCS / DAC): both achieve a net reduction in total atmospheric carbon.
- BECCS (Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage): plants absorb carbon, and the carbon is captured and stored when the plant biomass is burned for power.
- DAC (Direct Air Capture): large machines directly extract CO₂ from the atmosphere for storage.
Advantages
- The last mile to "net-zero emissions": even with full development of solar, wind, and other renewables, heavy industries such as steel and cement still have unavoidable process emissions.
- Protects existing industrial infrastructure and economic stability: transitioning to green energy takes time, and shutting down all fossil-fuel facilities immediately would cause major economic shock. CCS allows existing power plants and factories to keep operating while significantly reducing environmental harm, providing a buffer period for economic transition.
- Enables "negative emissions": combined with bioenergy (BECCS) or direct air capture (DAC), carbon storage is one of the few technologies that can actively "remove" existing CO₂ from the atmosphere, not just reduce new emissions.
