Geothermal Power

Geothermal energy comes primarily from the heat of molten rock inside the earth, or from energy released by the decay of radioactive materials. Geothermal power works by drilling to extract high-temperature water or steam from underground and channeling it to the surface to drive a turbine and generate electricity.

Application Areas

Geothermal energy is not limited to power generation. It is typically used in a "cascading utilization" approach that follows the temperature gradient, maximizing the value of the heat:

  • Power supply (high-temperature stage: > 120°C):
    • High-temperature steam or water is fed into the generation system described above and connected to the grid to provide stable power.
  • Industrial and agricultural use (medium-temperature stage: 60°C – 120°C):
    • Greenhouse cultivation: maintains constant greenhouse temperature for growing high-value flowers or crops.
    • Aquaculture: supplies the warm water tropical fish or shrimp need during winter.
    • Industrial drying: used for food processing, timber drying, or dehydrating agricultural products.

Advantages

Among the many forms of renewable energy, geothermal power has unique, irreplaceable characteristics:

  • Extremely high stability (base-load power):
    • Unlike solar and wind power, which depend on weather conditions, geothermal power is unaffected by day/night cycles, seasons, or climate, and can generate electricity around the clock. Its capacity factor is typically 80–90% or higher, making it an excellent source of base-load power.
  • Low-carbon and environmentally friendly:
    • Modern geothermal power plants (especially binary-cycle and full-reinjection systems) emit almost no greenhouse gases during power generation. The cooled water is reinjected deep underground, enabling recycling while maintaining underground pressure and preventing land subsidence.
  • Energy independence:
    • Geothermal energy is a domestically available natural resource that cannot be imported or exported. For countries or regions highly dependent on imported energy, developing geothermal power greatly enhances national energy security.
